Description
Microscopic sectioning of the tongue would typically place a stratified squamous mucosa superficially, with a lamina propria that projects into lingual papillae and houses taste buds in the epithelium of circumvallate or foliate papillae. Deep to the mucosa, interlacing bundles of skeletal muscle (intrinsic and extrinsic tongue fibers) run in orthogonal planes, separated by connective tissue septa and minor salivary glands, with neurovascular elements coursing between fascicles. A midline lingual septum may be appreciated, while the frenulum, when included, lies on the ventral surface as a mucosal fold tethering the tongue to the floor of mouth. Orientation matters. The provided image detail, though, reads as plant root tissue with nitrogen-fixing nodules rather than lingual histology, so it will not support teaching points tied to papillae, taste buds, or the lingual mucosa. For a true tongue slide, this magnification and staining are often used to explain why tumors can track along muscle planes (squamous cell carcinoma of the oral tongue) and why deep invasion correlates with occult nodal metastasis, given the rich lymphatic network beneath the mucosa. It is also the clearest way to contrast dorsal keratinized epithelium with ventral nonkeratinized mucosa and to localize taste buds to specific papillary types.
