Description
Seen from the ventral surface of the tongue, the inferior longitudinal muscle (musculus longitudinalis inferior linguae) forms paired, slender bundles running anteroposteriorly along the inferior aspect of the lingual body toward the apex. Medially, the fibers approach the lingual septum, while laterally they lie near the margin where the tongue meets the floor of mouth. Anteriorly the muscle contributes to the tapered tip, and posteriorly it blends with other intrinsic fibers near the root region. Intrinsic architecture is the story here. Functionally, the inferior longitudinal shortens the tongue and assists in depressing the apex, a movement pattern that becomes clinically relevant when you correlate dysarthria or dysphagia with hypoglossal nerve (CN XII) dysfunction. Unilateral hypoglossal palsy produces ipsilateral tongue atrophy and deviation on protrusion, and weakness of intrinsic muscles like this one helps explain the reduced fine control at the tip during articulation. This inferior perspective also supports teaching how intrinsic muscles differ from extrinsic muscles such as genioglossus, hyoglossus, and styloglossus, which alter tongue position relative to the mandible and hyoid rather than reshaping its surface.
