Description
Arising from the styloid process of the temporal bone, the styloglossus descends anteroinferiorly and medially to enter the lateral aspect of the tongue, where its fibers blend with the intrinsic lingual musculature as they course toward the apex. From an inferior perspective, the muscle lies lateral to the genioglossus and tracks along the side of the tongue base toward the oral cavity, with the mandibular dentition and hard palate superior in the field and the upper cervical spine inferior. Posteriorly, its origin sits near the stylohyoid ligament and the parapharyngeal space, a relationship that helps orient the muscle relative to the skull base. Functionally, the styloglossus retracts and elevates the tongue, and this view helps clarify how a skull base origin can influence bolus control at the oropharyngeal isthmus. That matters when teaching dysphagia mechanisms and when planning transoral or transpharyngeal approaches where lateral tongue musculature and adjacent neurovascular structures are at risk. Orientation at the styloid region also carries clinical weight in Eagle syndrome, where an elongated styloid process or calcified stylohyoid ligament can produce throat pain and foreign body sensation that may be confused with primary lingual pathology.
