Description
Arising from the styloid process of the temporal bone, the styloglossus muscle is rendered as a deep, longitudinal tongue muscle coursing anteroinferiorly to blend with the intrinsic musculature along the posterolateral tongue. In this lateral profile of the male skull and neck, the mandible and maxilla frame the oral cavity anteriorly while the muscle sits medial to the mandibular ramus and inferior to the zygomatic arch, with the floor of mouth structures implied deep to it. Posteriorly, its origin lies just anterior to the mastoid region, placing it near the parapharyngeal space and adjacent to the stylohyoid complex. Bony landmarks and cervical vertebrae provide reliable orientation. Styloglossus matters because it is one of the primary tongue retractors and elevators, a key driver of bolus propulsion during the oral phase of swallowing and a frequent teaching contrast with genioglossus, which protrudes and depresses the tongue. Its deep position makes it relevant to airway and pharyngeal mechanics, where reduced tongue tone or altered cranial base relationships can contribute to posterior tongue collapse in obstructive sleep apnea. Surgeons and anatomists also use the styloid process and styloglossus as regional landmarks when considering approaches that traverse the parapharyngeal corridor, where cranial nerves and the carotid sheath contents lie in close proximity. Head and neck anatomy courses, speech and swallowing (dysphagia) modules, and dental or ENT teaching atlases benefit from this side view when explaining extrinsic tongue muscle vectors against a fixed cranial base.
