Description
Beneath the skin of the lateral male head and neck, the styloglossus is seen descending from the styloid process of the temporal bone to blend into the posterolateral aspect of the tongue, running anteroinferiorly deep to the mandibular ramus and adjacent soft tissues of the oropharynx. Its fibers course medial to the mandible and approach the tongue from posterior to anterior, lying in the same functional compartment as the other extrinsic tongue muscles, with the hyoid bone and laryngeal framework situated inferiorly in the cervical region. Surrounding bony landmarks, including the maxilla, zygomatic bone, and mandible with dentition, frame the muscular path and clarify the spatial relationship between skull base and tongue. Styloglossus matters because it is a primary retractor and elevator of the tongue, a movement pattern that becomes clinically obvious in oral phase dysphagia and in the coordination demands of speech articulation.
