Description

Arising from the styloid process of the temporal bone, the styloglossus descends anteroinferiorly and medially to enter the posterolateral tongue, where its fibers blend with the intrinsic musculature along the side of the lingual body. From the superior aspect of the oral cavity, its course is appreciated as a lateral-to-medial sweep toward the dorsum, lying lateral to the genioglossus mass and overlapping the region where the hyoglossus would form a more inferior, vertical sheet. The maxillary dentition frames the anterior oral aperture, while the tongue fills the central field, allowing the extrinsic tongue muscles to be read against a familiar dental and palatal orientation. Clear fiber direction is the point. Styloglossus retracts and elevates the tongue, a key motion during the oral preparatory and oral propulsive phases of swallowing, and it works in concert with palatoglossus to narrow the oropharyngeal isthmus. This superior perspective helps when teaching why unilateral hypoglossal nerve (CN XII) weakness produces impaired bolus control and deviation patterns that differ from palatal dysfunction, because styloglossus contributes to posterior tongue shaping rather than pure midline protrusion.
