Description
Arising from the styloid process of the temporal bone, the styloglossus is shown bilaterally as it descends anteroinferiorly and then sweeps medially to blend into the lateral substance of the tongue, with its fibers coursing superiorly toward the dorsum. From this inferior, under-the-skin perspective, the hard palate and maxillary dentition sit superior to the oral cavity, while the nasal septum and posterior nasal cavity lie further superior and posterior. The hyoid bone appears inferior to the tongue base, and the laryngeal framework continues inferiorly into the trachea in the midline. Orientation is clear. Cervical vertebrae and deep cervical soft tissues provide posterior support behind the pharyngeal and laryngeal airway. Styloglossus matters because it retracts and elevates the tongue, shaping the bolus during the oral phase of swallowing and helping clear residue from the lateral sulci. Its proximity to the lateral pharyngeal wall and tongue base makes it relevant when teaching the muscular contributors to dysphagia after head and neck cancer treatment, or when interpreting post-operative tongue mobility after transoral resections.
