Description
Running along the ventral surface of the tongue, the inferior longitudinal muscle appears as a thin intrinsic band positioned just superior to the oral mucosa and inferior to the bulk of the lingual musculature. In a mid-sagittal male head and neck section, it courses from the region of the lingual root toward the apex, lying close to the lingual septum medially while remaining deep to the tongue’s inferior surface. Surrounding landmarks in profile include the maxilla and mandible with dentition, the hard and soft palate forming the roof of the oral cavity, and the hyoid and laryngeal framework inferiorly, with the cervical vertebrae providing a posterior bony reference. Because the inferior longitudinal shortens the tongue and pulls the apex inferiorly, this view is helpful when teaching how intrinsic muscles fine-tune articulation and bolus control without moving the hyoid. Small fiber directions matter. Clinically, it clarifies the muscular substrate involved when surgical planning approaches the ventral tongue, including excision of lesions along the inferior surface where proximity to the lingual septum and adjacent neurovascular planes shapes resection margins and postoperative mobility outcomes.
