Description
Viewed from a superior perspective into the oral cavity of an adult male, the dorsum of the tongue is opened to expose the inferior longitudinal muscle running anteroposteriorly along the ventrolateral tongue, immediately lateral to the lingual septum and extending toward the apex. Its fibers parallel the long axis of the tongue and sit deep to the mucosa near the margins, placing the muscle medial to the mandibular dental arch and inferior to the intrinsic transverse and vertical fiber planes that shape the tongue body. Surrounding landmarks include the maxillary and mandibular teeth within their dental arches, the hard palate superiorly, and the midline septal partition that organizes paired intrinsic muscle compartments. Genioglossus is included as an extrinsic reference, rising from the genial tubercles and fanning posteriorly into the tongue mass. This superior orientation is the cleanest way to teach how the inferior longitudinal acts as a paired “edge” muscle: shortening the tongue and assisting ipsilateral deviation, while also contributing to tongue tip depression when acting with other intrinsic bundles. Small, deep muscles matter in airway and speech workups. Weakness or incoordination from hypoglossal nerve (CN XII) lesions often presents as impaired bolus control and deviation on protrusion, and this view helps separate intrinsic deformity of the apex from genioglossus-driven midline mechanics. Use it in head and neck anatomy blocks to map intrinsic tongue layers, in dental and oral surgery teaching to orient the tongue relative to the mandibular dentition, and in speech-language pathology materials addressing tongue shaping for articulation and swallowing.
