Seen from an inferior, submental perspective, the ventral surface of the male tongue is opened to expose the intrinsic inferior longitudinal muscle (musculus longitudinalis inferior linguae) running anteroposteriorly near the mucosa from the apex toward the radix. Along the midline, the paired bundles sit deep to the lingual mucosa and adjacent to the lingual septum, while more posterior fibers blend with the intrinsic core near the genioglossus, which rises superiorly from the genial tubercles of the mandible. Superior to the field lie the hard and soft palate and maxillary dentition; inferior and posterior, the hyoid region leads into the laryngeal framework with thyroid and cricoid cartilages and the proximal trachea. Functionally, the inferior longitudinal muscle shortens the tongue and contributes to curling the apex inferiorly, a movement clinicians correlate with articulation and bolus manipulation in the oral phase of swallowing. Orientation matters: the inferior surface is where you appreciate how intrinsic fibers relate to the floor of mouth and to hypoglossal nerve (CN XII) motor supply, a relationship tested in tongue deviation and atrophy after iatrogenic injury during submandibular or base-of-tongue procedures.
