Description
Anteriorly within the open oral cavity, the inferior longitudinal muscle runs as a paired intrinsic band along the ventral surface of the tongue, extending from the region of the lingual apex posteriorly toward the body of the tongue. Its fibers lie deep to the lingual mucosa and inferior to the superior longitudinal muscle, closely related laterally to the genioglossus and the sublingual space. Surrounding context includes the mandible with the dental arcade (incisors through molars), the buccinator forming the lateral oral wall, and the masseter positioned more laterally on the mandibular ramus; inferior to the mandibular body, the anterior belly of the digastric is shown in the suprahyoid region.
