Description
Mammary gland anatomy is presented with emphasis on the glandular parenchyma within the female breast, including the lobules and their convergence into larger ductal pathways directed toward the nipple-areolar complex. Lobules occupy the superficial pectoral region in the subcutaneous plane, with fibrous septa (Cooper ligaments) traversing from the dermis toward the deep fascia over pectoralis major. The gland extends medially toward the parasternal line and laterally toward the anterior axillary line, where an axillary tail of Spence may project superolaterally. Understanding the internal organization of lobules and ducts matters when you need to correlate clinical findings with distribution patterns of disease. Most breast carcinomas arise from terminal ductal lobular units, and a schematic that clarifies lobule-to-duct continuity helps explain why masses and microcalcifications cluster in predictable segmental or ductal distributions on mammography. It also supports procedural planning, from core-needle biopsy trajectories to lumpectomy orientation relative to the nipple and the deep pectoral fascia. Small distances matter.
