Description

Centered on the anterior thoracic wall, the paired mammary glands are shown overlying the pectoralis major, their glandular parenchyma arranged in lobules that converge toward the nipple and areola as lactiferous ducts. Subcutaneous adipose tissue surrounds and interdigitates with the fibroglandular tissue, while suspensory (Cooper) ligaments course from dermis to deep fascia, explaining the breast’s superficial contour. Medially the breast footprint approaches the sternal margin; laterally it extends toward the anterior axillary line, with the upper outer quadrant projecting toward the axillary tail of Spence. Surface anatomy matters here because breast tissue is not confined to a neat circular mound, and clinical examination depends on understanding its true distribution on the chest. This view helps map where malignancy most often presents (upper outer quadrant) and why skin tethering, dimpling, or nipple retraction can signal invasion along Cooper ligaments or involvement of the subareolar ductal system. It also supports safe procedural planning: needle biopsy trajectories, abscess drainage, and incision placement for lumpectomy or reduction mammaplasty all change when you respect the relationship between gland, dermis, and pectoral fascia. A practical teaching point. Breast tissue sits on fascia, not muscle. Use this asset for gross anatomy and clinical skills teaching on breast examination, for OB-GYN or general surgery modules on lactation anatomy and breast-conserving surgery, and for patient-facing oncology education that benefits from accurate representation of a Black woman’s surface anatomy and internal breast architecture. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
