Description
Over the anterior thoracic wall, the breast is rendered with a transparent cutaway that separates the superficial skin envelope and subcutaneous fat from the deeper mammary gland. Lobes of glandular tissue radiate from the nipple and areola, their lactiferous ducts converging centrally before opening at the nipple, while Cooper ligaments course from dermis to deep fascia to suspend the gland. Arterial and venous channels track through the parenchyma and toward the periphery, and lymphatic vessels run in a fine network that trends superolaterally toward the axillary region and medially toward the parasternal area. Pigmented skin and areolar tissue are shown in a way consistent with darker phototypes. Clinically, this architecture underpins how breast disease presents and how it is staged. The superolateral lymphatic drainage to axillary nodes explains why upper outer quadrant carcinomas commonly metastasize to level I and II axillary lymph nodes, while medial lesions may drain to internal thoracic (parasternal) nodes that can be occult on routine palpation. Ductal anatomy matters for duct ectasia, intraductal papilloma, and the typical retroareolar distribution of discharge, and the fibrous suspensory ligaments help explain skin tethering and dimpling with invasive malignancy.
