Description
Displayed on the anterior thoracic wall, both mammae are shown with a semi-transparent overlay that allows the superficial integument and subcutaneous adipose tissue to be read against the deeper glandular parenchyma. The mammary gland lobules occupy the retromammary space superficial to pectoralis major, with lactiferous ducts converging anteromedially toward the nipple and expanding into lactiferous sinuses deep to the areola. Cooper ligaments (suspensory ligaments of the breast) can be inferred coursing from the dermis to the deep fascia, partitioning fat and gland and explaining the breast’s contour. This composite external plus internal view matters because it teaches the relationship between palpated findings and the ductal-lobular anatomy where most pathology arises. Invasive ductal carcinoma most often originates from terminal duct lobular units, while inflammatory breast cancer presents with dermal lymphatic obstruction and skin thickening, changes that make more sense when you can mentally separate skin, fat, and parenchyma. Orientation to the nipple-areolar complex and ductal convergence also supports procedural planning for subareolar abscess drainage and lactational duct obstruction.
