Description

Centered on the anterior thorax, the paired mammary glands drape over the pectoralis major, with the bulk of glandular tissue extending from the parasternal region medially toward the anterior axillary line laterally. Each breast is shown with a nipple (papilla mammae) and surrounding areola, while the subcutaneous adipose layer forms the superficial contour deep to the skin. Within the parenchyma, lobes subdivide into lobules, their lactiferous ducts converging toward the nipple in a radial pattern, separated from the pectoral fascia by the retromammary space. An anterior view with internal architecture is the one clinicians use to explain how a palpable mass relates to ducts, glandular tissue, and fat, and why findings often track along a ductal distribution. Most breast cancers arise from terminal duct lobular units, so depicting lobules and ductal convergence supports teaching on lesion origin, patterns of ductal carcinoma in situ, and the rationale for image guided core biopsy targeting.
