Description
Centered on the anterior thoracic wall, the breast is presented with the skin and nipple-areolar complex superficial to the subcutaneous fat, and lobulated glandular tissue arranged around the lactiferous duct system. Multiple lactiferous ducts converge toward the nipple, with terminal duct lobular units distributed more peripherally within the parenchyma. A vascular network courses through the connective stroma and along the surface of the gland, consistent with contributions from the internal thoracic (internal mammary) and lateral thoracic systems, while fine cutaneous and parenchymal nerves track with vessels toward the areola and nipple. Cooper’s suspensory ligaments are implied as fibrous septa tethering gland and skin to deeper fascia. That anatomy matters because most breast pathology arises where ducts and lobules meet. Carcinoma commonly originates in the terminal duct lobular unit, then spreads along ducts, into the subareolar region, and through lymphatics that accompany the vascular plexus toward axillary and parasternal nodes. Surgeons planning lumpectomy or mastectomy, and clinicians interpreting nipple discharge, rely on a clear mental map of duct convergence, vascular supply, and sensory innervation.
