Description
Paired mammary glands are presented in cross section within the anterior thoracic wall, with lobules embedded in abundant subcutaneous adipose tissue and supported by fibrous connective stroma consistent with suspensory ligaments of Cooper. Lactiferous ducts converge from the peripheral glandular tissue toward the nipple and areola at the most anterior aspect, while the skin and superficial fascia form the outer boundary. Posteriorly, the retromammary space separates the breast parenchyma from the deep pectoral fascia over pectoralis major, a key relationship when teaching mobility of the breast on the chest wall. Segmental arteries and veins traverse the stroma, and fine cutaneous and glandular nerves course toward the nipple-areolar complex. Cross-sectional anatomy of the breast matters because most diagnostic imaging and interventional planning, including ultrasound, tomosynthesis, and MRI, depends on knowing what normal glandular tissue, fat, and fibrous septa look like in layered relationship.
