Description
Prominent in the upper abdomen, the portal vein is rendered as a thick main trunk approaching the porta hepatis, where it divides into right and left portal branches that course into the corresponding hepatic lobes. Semi-transparency of the liver parenchyma allows the intrahepatic portal venules to be followed centrifugally toward smaller peripheral branches, forming the classic arborizing pattern of the portal circulation.
