Description

Arising from the medial aspect of the plantar venous network, the medial plantar vein courses anteriorly along the inner sole, closely accompanying the medial plantar artery and medial plantar nerve deep to the abductor hallucis. From a medial viewpoint, its tributary venules can be followed draining the medial longitudinal arch and medial forefoot, with connections toward the plantar venous arch. Superiorly and posteriorly, the vessel’s pathway relates to the tarsal region and the interval approaching the ankle where plantar drainage continues toward the posterior tibial venous system. Spatial relationships are clear. A medial perspective matters because it mirrors the corridor used when tracing neurovascular bundles in the tarsal tunnel and along the medial plantar compartment, where swelling, scarring, or iatrogenic injury can compromise venous return and adjacent nerve function. Venous anatomy here also intersects practical problems, from medial plantar heel pain workups (where local inflammation can obscure soft tissue planes) to planning flap elevation on the instep, where preserving accompanying veins reduces postoperative congestion. For teaching, the juxtaposition of vein, artery, and nerve under abductor hallucis is the key relationship. Use this plate in lower limb anatomy courses to anchor the medial plantar compartment, and in surgical education materials covering tarsal tunnel release, instep approaches, or plantar soft tissue reconstruction. It also suits vascular and podiatry publications that need accurate naming and course of the medial plantar vein and its venules against bones, tendons, and intrinsic muscles of the foot.
