Description

Radiating from the cardiac silhouette, the pulmonary trunk exits the right ventricle anteriorly and bifurcates into right and left pulmonary arteries that course laterally toward the hila, where lobar and segmental branches spread through the lung fields. Pulmonary veins converge from the periphery toward the left atrium, running posterior to the pulmonary arteries at the hilum and returning oxygenated blood from each lung. Aorta and superior vena cava sit as familiar mediastinal neighbors, framing the central pulmonary conduit in an X-ray style, semi-transparent rendering. Depth cues make the valve planes readable. Dual pulmonary circulation matters because it ties anatomy to physiology and to how disease declares itself. The low-pressure pulmonary arterial tree and the higher-pressure bronchial circulation (often implied when small systemic feeders are shown around the hilar region) behave differently in hemoptysis, chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, and postinfarction pulmonary hemorrhage. Catheter-based procedures depend on this roadmap: pulmonary angiography and right heart catheterization traverse the right atrium and ventricle into the pulmonary trunk, while pulmonary vein anatomy becomes the procedural substrate for atrial fibrillation ablation at the left atrial ostia.
