Description
Radiating from the mediastinum, the pulmonary trunk exits the right ventricle and bifurcates into right and left pulmonary arteries that course laterally toward the hila, where lobar and segmental branches spread into the lung fields. Returning centrally, paired pulmonary veins from each lung converge toward the left atrium, their more anterior and inferior trajectory contrasting with the arteries that lie closer to the bronchial tree. The cardiac silhouette sits midline, with the ascending aorta rising superiorly and the superior vena cava descending on the right side of the great vessel complex. Spatial relationships at the lung root are the point. An x-ray style rendering fits how clinicians learn to read the hilum, because arteries and veins overlap in projection and the only reliable clues are caliber, branching angles, and their relationship to the heart border. This view supports teaching of pulmonary venous hypertension and edema patterns, where venous congestion, cephalization of flow, and perihilar vascular prominence are interpreted against expected pulmonary vascular anatomy.
