Retroauricular Lymphatics

Description

Posterior to the auricle, retroauricular (mastoid) lymphatic vessels course in the superficial fascia overlying the mastoid process and the attachment of the sternocleidomastoid, converging on the retroauricular lymph nodes along the posterior auricular vessels. Superiorly, channels collect from the posterior scalp and superior auricular region, while inferiorly they track toward the upper cervical chain near the angle of the mandible and along the anterior border of sternocleidomastoid. The illustration logically includes adjacent parotid and upper cervical lymphatic groups for continuity of drainage. Orientation around the occipital bone and temporal bone provides bony landmarks. Retroauricular drainage matters when you need to localize a source of infection or malignancy in the scalp and external ear and correlate it with nodal enlargement just posterior to the pinna. Tender retroauricular nodes are a classic bedside clue in rubella, and they also enlarge with otitis externa, infected posterior scalp lacerations, or auricular cellulitis; the nodal basin sits near the mastoid cortex, a region where postauricular surgical incisions and mastoidectomy approaches require awareness of superficial lymphatics and the nearby greater auricular and lesser occipital nerves. Palpation anatomy is the point. This view keeps the mastoid process as the anchor.
