Description
Framed within the male thorax, the paired costae curve anterolaterally from the thoracic vertebrae toward the anterior midline, where the costal cartilages converge on the sternum. Posteriorly, each rib meets the vertebral column at the costovertebral and costotransverse joints, while the rib shafts sweep inferiorly and anteriorly to define the contour of the chest wall. Along the midline, the manubrium, body of sternum, and xiphoid process align superior to inferior, with the sternal angle marking the manubriosternal junction and corresponding to the level of the second costal cartilage. Symmetry and segmental spacing make individual ribs easy to track. For teaching and clinical orientation, a 3D ribcage view clarifies the distinction between true ribs (1 to 7) attaching directly to the sternum, false ribs (8 to 10) joining the costal margin, and floating ribs (11 and 12) ending posteriorly in the abdominal wall.
