Seen in lateral profile, the thoracic cage is defined by the sequential costae curving posteriorly from the vertebral column toward the anterior midline, with the cranial ribs descending obliquely and the caudal ribs sweeping more steeply toward the costal margin. Dorsally, the rib heads articulate at the costovertebral joints adjacent to the thoracic vertebrae, while the shafts bow laterally to create the widest diameter of the chest at mid thorax. Anteriorly, costal cartilages would be expected to converge toward the sternum, although the sternum itself may be partially obscured in a strict lateral projection. Clear, simple geometry. That is the point. A lateral ribcage view is the workhorse for teaching respiratory mechanics and for correlating surface anatomy with pleural reflections, where small changes in rib angle and intercostal space width matter when you place a chest tube or plan a thoracotomy incision. Clinically, this perspective supports discussion of rib fracture patterns (often at the angle of the rib after blunt trauma) and helps explain why flail chest compromises ventilatory mechanics even when the underlying lung parenchyma is intact.
