Description
Posterior thoracic anatomy is presented with the paired costae sweeping laterally from the thoracic vertebrae and curving anteriorly toward their costal cartilages and the sternum. Proximally, each rib meets the vertebral column at the costovertebral and costotransverse joints, with the rib angles marking the transition from the posterior shaft to the lateral arc. Superior ribs sit more horizontally, while the inferior ribs slope and narrow as they approach the costal margin. Symmetry is emphasized. This posterior perspective matters when you need to teach where ribs articulate and how they move during ventilation, because the bucket-handle and pump-handle mechanics are easiest to explain when students can locate the rib angle and the thoracic transverse processes. Clinically, the view maps directly to posterior thoracotomy landmarks and to intercostal nerve blocks, where the neurovascular bundle runs in the costal groove along the inferior border of each rib and is approached with the needle kept just superior to the rib below.
