Description
Centered in anterior anatomical position, the female thoracic cage is presented with the ribs (costae) highlighted against the remainder of the axial and appendicular skeleton. Curving laterally from the thoracic vertebrae, each rib sweeps anteromedially toward the sternum via its costal cartilage, forming the costal arch and inferior costal margin. Superiorly, the manubrium and clavicles frame the thoracic inlet, while inferiorly the xiphoid process sits at midline above the upper lumbar spine and pelvis; the scapulae lie posterior to the rib cage, their outlines still apparent through the front-facing projection. Anterior rib anatomy is where surface landmarks meet common procedures, and it is also where mistakes happen. The costal cartilages of ribs 1 to 7 define the true ribs and the parasternal region, a key reference for median sternotomy, internal thoracic artery harvest, and sternal wire placement after cardiac surgery. Lateral to the sternum, the intercostal spaces guide chest tube insertion, and the neurovascular bundle’s course along the inferior border of each rib explains why thoracostomy is performed just superior to a rib to reduce injury; in women, the breast and pectoralis major commonly obscure these bony cues, so a clean skeletal view helps teach palpation and safe instrument trajectory.
