Description
Posterior thoracic cage anatomy is rendered with the ribs (costae) highlighted against the axial skeleton, allowing the costovertebral and costotransverse articulations to be read in relation to the thoracic vertebrae. Each rib curves laterally from its head and neck to the posterior rib angle before sweeping anteriorly toward the costal cartilages and costal arch, while the eleventh and twelfth ribs terminate as floating ribs inferiorly. Medial to the rib arcs, the spinous processes form a midline landmark; laterally, the scapulae overlap ribs 2 through 7, with the scapular spine crossing obliquely toward the acromion. Clear bony geometry. A posterior orientation is the workhorse view for teaching rib numbering and for explaining why fractures cluster at the rib angle, where bending stress concentrates and the serratus anterior and latissimus dorsi exert opposing pulls during respiration and lifting. It also supports discussion of posterior thoracic procedures, since a posterolateral thoracotomy tracks between rib spaces and risks intercostal neurovascular injury along the inferior rib margin, while costovertebral joint disruption can accompany high energy trauma and present with paraspinal tenderness and altered rib contour. Subtle asymmetries become easier to call out in scoliosis, where vertebral rotation changes rib prominence and produces a posterior rib hump.
