Description
Centered on the posterior thigh and knee, the semimembranosus is highlighted as the broad, deep medial hamstring, arising from the superolateral impression of the ischial tuberosity and descending inferiorly to the posteromedial proximal tibia. Lateral to it run the biceps femoris long head and short head, converging toward the fibular head, while the semitendinosus sits more superficial and medial with its long cordlike tendon. At the knee, semimembranosus passes posterior to the medial femoral condyle and flares into a complex distal expansion that blends with the posteromedial capsule. Clear landmarks. Posterior emphasis makes the semimembranosus easy to place within the popliteal region, where its distal tendon and reflected expansion help form the oblique popliteal ligament and define the medial boundary of the popliteal fossa. Clinically, this is the tendon implicated in posteromedial knee pain and snapping phenomena, and it is a frequent site of proximal hamstring tendinopathy at the ischial tuberosity in sprinters and field athletes. For surgical planning, the spatial relationship of the medial hamstrings to the popliteal neurovascular bundle is a practical teaching point when discussing approaches to posterior knee cysts, distal femur fractures, or hamstring harvest considerations. Use this asset in lower-limb anatomy labs, sports medicine teaching on hamstring strain patterns, and orthopedic or radiology publications that need a clean posterior map of hamstring origins, insertions, and knee-level expansions in an adult male.
