Description

Posterior thigh anatomy is presented with the semimembranosus highlighted deep to the more superficial semitendinosus, tracking from its proximal origin on the ischial tuberosity toward the posteromedial knee. Distally, the broad semimembranosus tendon passes posterior to the medial femoral condyle and approaches its primary insertion on the posterior medial tibial condyle, just inferior to the joint line. The femur, patella, tibia (medial) and fibula (lateral) provide bony reference, while the popliteal region sits immediately lateral and slightly anterior to the distal tendon as it borders the popliteal fossa. The deep position and broad distal expansion make semimembranosus a key landmark for posteromedial knee anatomy because its tendon gives slips to the posterior capsule, including the oblique popliteal ligament, and lies close to the semimembranosus bursa. Medial knee pain after sprinting or heavy hamstring loading often localizes here, where semimembranosus tendinopathy or a reactive bursa can mimic meniscal pathology on exam and can be confused with a Baker cyst in the adjacent popliteal area. Small details matter. Use this plate in lower limb gross anatomy teaching to contrast semimembranosus with semitendinosus, to map hamstring function across the hip and knee joints, and to orient trainees to the posteromedial corner before discussing MRI correlations or medial knee surgical approaches. It also suits sports medicine texts covering hamstring injuries and rehabilitation planning in male athletes. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
