Description
Centered in the upper abdomen, the stomach sits in the left upper quadrant just inferior to the diaphragm, with the abdominal esophagus descending through the esophageal hiatus to join the gastric cardia at the gastroesophageal junction. An anterior perspective makes the lesser curvature and proximal body read clearly, while the fundus projects superiorly and to the left beneath the left hemidiaphragm and the pyloric region angles inferiorly and to the right toward the duodenum. Superior to the esophagus, the lower pharynx and cervical esophagus align in the midline before the tube deviates slightly left in the thorax. Surrounding thoracoabdominal contours provide surface context for pediatric proportions. Clinical teaching often hinges on this junction. Gastroesophageal reflux disease in children localizes to the distal esophagus and cardia, where mucosal injury and stricture formation can follow chronic exposure to gastric contents. This anterior arrangement also supports explanation of congenital anomalies such as hiatal hernia and esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula, where foregut continuity and the transition from pharynx to esophagus become more than academic landmarks.
