Description
Shown in a sectional adult male skull, the temporal bone is opened to the floor of the cranial cavity, bringing the squamous part laterally and the petrous part medially into the same field. The zygomatic process projects anteriorly from the squama toward the zygomatic bone, while the tympanic part forms the tympanic plate around the external acoustic meatus. Inferiorly and posteriorly, the mastoid process stands out as a thickened prominence, positioned posterolateral to the styloid region and just behind the mandibular fossa. This angle matters because the petrous temporal bone concentrates high stakes neurovascular anatomy in dense bone: the internal acoustic meatus transmits the facial and vestibulocochlear nerves, and nearby canals and foramina frame the surgical corridors used in middle cranial fossa and transmastoid approaches. Otologic infection tracking into mastoid air cells, temporal bone fracture lines crossing the petrous ridge, and facial nerve vulnerability at the geniculate ganglion all become easier to teach when the tympanic plate, mastoid region, and petrous apex are read in relation to the cranial base.
