Description
Seen in left lateral section, the temporal bone is presented with its squamous part forming the lateral cranial wall and the zygomatic process projecting anteriorly to meet the zygomatic bone at the zygomaticotemporal suture. Medial and inferior to the squama, the petrous part thickens toward the skull base, adjacent to the mastoid region posteriorly and the mandibular fossa anteriorly for the temporomandibular joint. Superiorly, the temporal bone abuts the parietal bone along the squamosal suture, while the frontal and parietal contours frame the highlighted paranasal sinuses in the anterior cranial region. Teeth sit within the maxilla and mandible for orientation. That lateral cutaway matters because it makes the spatial relationship between sinonasal air spaces and the bony skull base easy to teach without losing external landmarks. The frontal sinus and ethmoid air cells lie anterior and medial to the temporal region but share clinically relevant drainage pathways into the nasal cavity, and inflammatory disease here can extend to the orbit or anterior cranial fossa. Clear depiction of the temporal bone and mandibular fossa also supports discussion of TMJ biomechanics and adjacent temporal bone fractures, where force transmission can involve the squamous temporal and zygomatic arch.
