Description
Curving across the temporal region, the temporal branch of the facial nerve (ramus temporalis nervi facialis, CN VII) is traced from the parotid region anterior to the external ear toward the lateral forehead. Its course runs superior and anterior, crossing the zygomatic arch in a high arc and traveling in the superficial fascia over the temporalis muscle toward the frontalis and superior orbicularis oculi. Surrounding bony landmarks include the frontal bone, zygomatic bone, maxilla, and mandible, with the orbit, nasal aperture, dentition, and a segment of the cervical vertebral column providing orientation in the head and neck. Nerve fibers are rendered as peripheral branches, distinguishing this motor pathway from deeper cranial and cervical neural elements. Functionally, this branch carries the motor outflow that elevates the brow and contributes to eyelid closure, so its surface anatomy matters any time you work in the temple or lateral orbital region. Injury is a known risk during rhytidectomy (facelift), temporal brow lift, and trauma repair across the zygomatic arch, where dissection planes and traction can denervate frontalis and produce ipsilateral brow ptosis. Surgeons often estimate its trajectory using surface landmarks relative to the tragus and lateral canthus, and the high curve illustrated here reflects the danger zone that drives conservative flap elevation and careful hemostasis around the superficial temporal vessels.
