Description
Sweeping anterosuperiorly from the parotid region, the temporal branch (ramus temporalis) of the facial nerve (CN VII) courses across the zygomatic arch toward the temporal fossa, running superficial to the temporalis fascia as it climbs above the auricle. A lateral skull view frames the nerve against the squamous temporal bone, zygomatic bone, and the mandibular ramus and condyle, with the external acoustic meatus and auricular cartilage used as surface landmarks. Inferiorly, the upper cervical spine provides orientation to the mastoid process and stylomastoid region where the facial nerve exits the skull base. Fine neural elements are rendered as axon bundles with small ganglionic structures for teaching context. Temporal branch anatomy is a recurring pain point in facial surgery because it sits in the plane traversed by facelift (rhytidectomy) dissections and by approaches to the zygomatic arch and temporomandibular joint. Injury here produces weakness of the frontalis and orbicularis oculi (forehead asymmetry, impaired brow elevation, incomplete eyelid closure), and the risk rises where the nerve crosses the arch within the so-called danger zone between the tragus and the lateral brow. This lateral perspective also helps distinguish CN VII from nearby trigeminal distributions (CN V), a common source of confusion when teaching sensory versus motor deficits.
