Description

Shown in lateral profile, the tenth ribs (costae X) arc anteroinferiorly from the T10 vertebra, with the rib head and neck articulating posteriorly at the costovertebral and costotransverse joints and the shaft sweeping toward the anterior abdominal wall. Distally, the osseous rib transitions at the costochondral junction into costal cartilage, which curves superiorly and medially to join the costal margin rather than attaching directly to the sternum. Adjacent ribs frame the intercostal spaces, while the thoracic vertebral column sits medial and posterior to the rib cage with its normal kyphotic contour.
