Description
Seen in lateral profile, the male skeletal thorax is centered on the thoracic vertebrae and their posterior articulations with the ribs at the costovertebral and costotransverse joints. Each rib sweeps anteriorly and inferiorly from its head and tubercle toward the costal cartilages and sternum, forming the characteristic anterolateral curvature of the chest wall. Superiorly, the upper ribs align with the thoracic inlet near the cervicothoracic junction, while inferiorly the lower ribs approach the thoracolumbar transition, with selected ribs highlighted to draw attention to a specific level of the cage. Intervertebral discs are visible between adjacent vertebral bodies, continuing caudally toward the lumbar spine and sacrum. A lateral thoracic view clarifies rib slope, intercostal space orientation, and the posterior bony landmarks that guide thoracic procedures. Needle thoracostomy and chest tube placement are taught in relation to the rib margin because the intercostal neurovascular bundle runs in the costal groove along the inferior border of each rib, making “over the top of the rib” more than a slogan. This profile also helps explain patterns of rib fracture and flail chest, where mid-axillary bending stresses commonly disrupt the arcuate rib shafts while the vertebral attachments remain relatively protected.
