Description
Shown in lateral profile, the male thoracic cage curves anteriorly from the thoracic vertebral bodies and transverse processes to the costovertebral and costotransverse joints, then sweeps forward as ribs 1 to 12 toward their costal cartilages. Superior ribs (true ribs 1 to 7) course to the sternum anteriorly, while ribs 8 to 10 form the false rib margin via the costal arch, and ribs 11 to 12 remain floating with free anterior ends. Posteriorly, the thoracic spine anchors the cage, with each rib head articulating across adjacent vertebral bodies and the intervertebral disc, and each rib tubercle meeting the corresponding transverse process. Color banding separates rib groups for rapid orientation. A lateral thorax view clarifies the mechanics and injury patterns that are harder to read from an anterior plate: the posterior rib angle, the relationship of rib curvature to the vertebral column, and the transition from rib to cartilage near the costochondral junction.
