Description

Posterior body-surface anatomy frames paired kidneys in the retroperitoneum, projected onto the lower thoracic to upper lumbar back just inferior to the 12th rib, with the left kidney positioned slightly superior to the right. At the medial concavity of each kidney, the renal hilum is emphasized, where the renal artery and renal vein converge with the renal pelvis, which narrows to become the ureter. Each ureter descends inferiorly along the psoas major region toward the pelvis, approaching the urinary bladder in the midline. Major landmarks orient the viewer fast. A posterior view is the clearest way to teach renal position relative to the costovertebral angle, the surface landmark used in bedside assessment and in planning posterior percutaneous renal access. Distinguishing the hilum and renal pelvis helps explain why obstructing calculi at the ureteropelvic junction can produce hydronephrosis, and why hilar vascular variants matter during nephrectomy or renal transplantation procurement. The retroperitoneal location also clarifies how flank trauma may injure kidney parenchyma without obvious peritoneal signs. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and urogenital modules to connect internal urinary anatomy with palpation landmarks, and in clinical skills materials covering costovertebral angle tenderness, pyelonephritis, and renal colic patterns. It also suits patient-facing education for posterior flank pain workups and radiology primers that correlate surface anatomy with CT urography and intravenous pyelogram concepts.
