Description
Centered on an adult female skeleton in anatomical position, the radius is highlighted bilaterally along the lateral (thumb-side) forearm from the radial head proximally to the broad distal metaphysis and styloid process. Medially, the ulna parallels the radius, allowing the radial shaft to cross the ulna during pronation while remaining lateral in supination, a relationship that becomes clear along the anterior aspect of the curved diaphysis. At the elbow, the disc-shaped radial head sits inferior to the capitulum of the humerus and just lateral to the trochlear notch of the ulna; distally, the radius lies lateral to the ulnar head and forms the primary bony platform for the carpal bones at the radiocarpal joint. Orientation is unmistakable. Clinically, the anterior radius matters because it frames two high-yield joint mechanics in one line of sight: rotation at the proximal and distal radioulnar joints and load transfer at the wrist. Distal radius fractures (classically a Colles fracture after a fall on an outstretched hand) alter radial height, volar tilt, and inclination, and those changes predict distal radioulnar joint instability and ulnar-sided wrist pain. The proximal end is just as relevant, since radial head fractures can block forearm rotation and are easy to misjudge unless you appreciate how the radial head aligns with the capitulum in any elbow position.
