Description
Posteriorly oriented female skeleton places the paired radii in sharp relief along the lateral (radial) side of each forearm, extending from the radial head just inferior to the lateral epicondyle of the humerus to the broadened distal radius proximal to the carpal bones. Medial to each radius runs the ulna, with the interosseous space between them corresponding to the interosseous membrane that binds the two bones along their shafts. Proximally, the disc-shaped head of the radius aligns with the capitulum and radial notch of the ulna, while distally the radius flares laterally toward the radial styloid process, forming the dominant articular surface for the scaphoid and lunate. Orientation is straightforward. Forearm rotation depends on the radius swinging around the ulna, so a posterior full-skeleton view that highlights both radii helps teach pronation and supination as a bilateral, symmetric motion rather than an isolated forearm event. The proximal radius matters clinically at the elbow: radial head fractures from a fall on an outstretched hand can block rotation and are assessed relative to the capitellum on imaging and during lateral (Kocher) or posterior approaches. Distally, the radius is the usual site of Colles and Smith fractures, and loss of radial height or inclination alters distal radioulnar joint mechanics, with downstream effects on grip strength and ulnar-sided wrist pain.
