Description
Maxillary body (corpus maxillae) fills the midface in this anterior view, with the infraorbital margin superiorly and the alveolar process forming the inferior boundary where the maxillary teeth would anchor. Lateral to the piriform aperture, the anterior surface transitions toward the zygomatic process, while the frontal process rises superomedially to meet the nasal bones and frontal bone. The infraorbital foramen sits inferior to the orbital rim, typically aligned above the premolar region, and opens onto the canine fossa, a shallow depression that lies lateral to the nasal aperture and superior to the canine eminence. Medially, the nasal notch and anterior nasal spine outline the bony entrance to the nasal cavity. Fracture patterns and regional anesthesia both hinge on this anatomy. The infraorbital foramen marks the exit of the infraorbital nerve and vessels, a common target for infraorbital nerve blocks and a structure at risk in Le Fort fractures and zygomaticomaxillary complex trauma, where step-offs can be appreciated along the infraorbital rim and anterior maxillary wall.
