Description
Maxillary body anatomy is presented from an inferior perspective, emphasizing the palatine surface and the hollow, pyramidal maxillary sinus within the corpus maxillae. Medially, the palatine process approaches the intermaxillary suture to form the anterior hard palate, while laterally the alveolar process curves into the dental arch where the tooth sockets (alveoli) would occupy the inferior margin in life. Posteriorly, the maxillary tuberosity broadens behind the molar region, and anteriorly the incisive region transitions toward the nasal aperture and the incisive canal area at the midline. The floor of the maxillary sinus lies superior to the posterior alveolar region, a close relationship that is often only appreciated when the bone is viewed from below. Odontogenic disease and surgery frequently exploit this anatomy. Periapical infection of the maxillary molars and premolars can breach the thin sinus floor, producing odontogenic maxillary sinusitis or an oroantral communication after extraction, and implant planning depends on knowing where sinus pneumatization has reduced residual bone height. One fixed inferior viewpoint makes the spatial logic obvious: the palate forming medially, the alveolar arch laterally, and the sinus cavity occupying the central body. Bony contours matter here. They guide Le Fort I osteotomy planning and help explain why posterior maxillary procedures risk sinus entry.
