Description
Viewed laterally on an adult male head and neck, the buccal lymphatic vessels course superficially across the cheek, embedded in the buccal fat pad and running in close association with the facial musculature. Anterior to the masseter and inferior to the zygomatic arch, lymphatics from the buccal mucosa and skin converge toward small buccal (facial) lymph nodes that lie along the course of the facial artery and vein. Deeper landmarks such as the mandibular body and ramus provide bony orientation, while the platysma drapes inferiorly across the angle of the mandible into the cervical region. Spatially, this network sits lateral to the buccinator, anterior to the parotid region, and superior to the submandibular triangle. For teaching lymphatic drainage of the face, a true lateral perspective clarifies where buccal pathways intersect with surgical planes used in oral and maxillofacial procedures. This is the drainage territory implicated when infections of the upper lip or cheek spread to facial nodes, and it helps explain why odontogenic or buccal space infections can present with tender nodal enlargement along the facial vessels. Clear relationships to the masseter and mandibular border also matter during incisions for abscess drainage, where disrupting superficial lymphatics and nearby facial nerve branches can complicate healing and sensation.
