Description
Arising from the parotid plexus after the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII) exits the stylomastoid foramen, the cervical branch descends inferior to the angle of the mandible and tracks anteroinferiorly across the upper neck. Laterally, it runs superficial to the carotid sheath region but deep to the platysma as it approaches the submandibular area, with the external ear and parotid region serving as clear surface landmarks. Red musculature frames its course, including the sternocleidomastoid posteriorly and the suprahyoid and infrahyoid groups more anteriorly. Yellow neural tracings clarify the cervical branch’s relationship to adjacent facial nerve divisions near the parotid tail. Surgical relevance drives this lateral perspective. During submandibular gland surgery, parotid tail procedures, rhytidectomy, and neck lift dissections, the cervical branch is vulnerable where it dips below the mandibular border and traverses the superficial fascia toward the platysma, and injury can present as ipsilateral platysma weakness with an asymmetric lower neck contour on grimace. This view also helps distinguish facial nerve territory from the nearby transverse cervical nerve (C2 to C3) and great auricular nerve, both encountered in lateral neck approaches. Use this plate when teaching head and neck anatomy in gross lab, dental curricula, or facial nerve modules that emphasize motor branching patterns and operative danger zones.
