Description
Positioned on the lateral aspect of the male head and upper neck, the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII) is shown emerging from the stylomastoid foramen posterior to the auricle, then coursing anteroinferiorly toward the parotid region before dividing into peripheral branches. A fine communicating branch is highlighted as it bridges motor facial nerve fibers to adjacent sensory pathways near the external acoustic meatus, in the interval where the auriculotemporal nerve (V3) and great auricular nerve (C2-C3) also supply peri-auricular skin. Superficial landmarks include the auricle and external auditory canal, with nearby musculature such as the sternocleidomastoid lying posteroinferiorly and the muscles of facial expression situated more anteriorly. Small accompanying vessels track with the neural plane around the parotid and periauricular tissues. Communicating branches in this region matter because they sit directly in the corridor used for parotidectomy, facelift approaches, and repair of traumatic periauricular lacerations. Injury to tiny cross-connections can explain unexpected sensory symptoms around the pinna or atypical pain patterns after surgery, even when the main facial nerve trunk remains intact. These fine neural bridges are also a practical reminder that the periauricular cutaneous territory reflects overlap between cranial and cervical nerves, not a clean textbook boundary. Small anatomy, real consequences.
