Seen from a lateral aspect, a single vertebra is paired with its adjacent intervertebral disc, centered on the vertebral body and aligned with the superior and inferior endplates. Concentric lamellae of the annulus fibrosus form the peripheral ring of fibrocartilage, while the nucleus pulposus sits more centrally within the disc, slightly posterior to the midpoint in the typical adult disc. Posteriorly, the vertebral arch extends into the spinous process, with the transverse processes projecting laterally as clear landmarks for orientation. A side view like this is the clearest way to teach disc height and sagittal loading, the mechanical context for common degenerative disc disease and disc herniation patterns. Posterolateral annular fissures are a classic pathway for nucleus migration toward the spinal canal, where the exiting nerve root may be affected depending on level, a core concept in correlating radicular pain with anatomy.
