Description
Cut through the disc and adjacent vertebral body reveals the annulus fibrosus as concentric lamellae of fibrocartilage wrapped around a central nucleus pulposus. Alternating oblique collagen fiber bundles run in opposing directions from one lamella to the next, forming a crossed lattice that sits peripheral to the gelatinous core. Superior and inferior to the disc, the vertebral endplates cap the vertebral body, while posteriorly the vertebral foramen marks the boundary of the spinal canal. Annular fiber orientation is not academic detail, it explains how the disc resists torsion and why certain loading patterns fail. Posterolateral annulus is typically thinner and less supported by the posterior longitudinal ligament, a setup that maps cleanly onto common posterolateral herniation patterns with nerve root compression in the lateral recess. When you teach disc degeneration, the same lamellar architecture helps clarify radial fissures, internal disc disruption, and why nucleus material can track through annular tears rather than simply bulging uniformly.
