Running along the plantar aspect of the lateral foot, the lateral plantar veins are shown as paired venae comitantes accompanying the lateral plantar artery deep to the plantar aponeurosis. From the plantar venous arch in the midfoot, these veins course posteriorly and proximally, lying inferior to the quadratus plantae and adjacent to the lateral plantar nerve as they approach the medial side of the calcaneus. Proximally, they contribute to the posterior tibial veins in the retromalleolar region, deep to the flexor retinaculum and posterior to the medial malleolus. Orientation is strictly lateral, so the calcaneus and cuboid region anchor the distal anatomy while the ankle marks the superior limit. A lateral perspective is where the deep pedal venous pathway makes sense spatially, because you can track the transition from the plantar venous arch to the retromalleolar segment without confusing it with the more superficial lateral marginal vein and small saphenous system.
