Description
Viewed in right lateral profile, the scalp arterial network courses superficial to the cranial vault and deep to the skin, with branches fanning superiorly from the external carotid system and meeting across the temporal and parietal regions through frequent anastomoses. The superficial temporal artery ascends anterior to the auricle, giving frontal and parietal rami over the temporalis, while the posterior auricular artery tracks posterior to the pinna toward the mastoid region. Anteriorly, the facial artery and its angular continuation climb along the nasolabial fold toward the medial canthus, running in close relationship to the orbicularis oris and orbicularis oculi. Muscular landmarks including temporalis and masseter frame the vascular paths. Dense connections. Scalp arteries matter because they are tethered within the dense connective tissue of the scalp, so lacerations often bleed briskly and retract poorly during repair, even when the skin wound looks modest.
